At Empowering Citizens, we are committed to continuing to inform our students and community of current events that are not only happening at a national level but at a global level as well. In recent months countries around the world including the United States have been facing a newly identified coronavirus (COVID-19) that was first identified in December 2019. Because it is a new virus, there is no immunity to it at this time; nor is there a vaccine available. Further, given the trajectory of cases to date, it is expected that many more may already have been exposed, or will be exposed, to the virus in the weeks ahead. On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) characterized the newly identified coronavirus as a pandemic, however, describing the situation as a pandemic does not change the WHO’s assessment of the threat posed by this virus. It doesn’t change what the WHO is doing, and it doesn’t change what countries should do. Given the recent increase of cases of people contracting the coronavirus in our nation and around the world federal and state agencies are implementing protocols and guidelines for institutions and the general public to follow to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Empowering Citizens is committed to ensuring the safety of all of our students and staff members that step into our office. Therefore, we have decided to suspend all activities at our office until further notice. We are still, however, assisting anyone via email or phone appointments. We are continuing to closely monitor the outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19), consulting with the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, following the guidelines and protocols recommended by the World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and local health officials.

Health and safety are all of our responsibilities. We encourage you to practice safety measures at home and only go out in public for essential matters only. Wash your hands with soap and water frequently, cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or your elbow if you have to sneeze or cough. This is not a time to panic. It is, however, a time to be attentive, serious and engaged regarding the steps we need to take as a community to care for ourselves and for one another.
